Onam is the state festival of Kerala. It is celebrated in honour of Mahabali, the mythical Asura king of ancient Kerala. Malayalees believe that on Onam day Bali visits his subjects. This harvest festival falls in August / September. Kerala Government officially declared Onam as State Festival in 1961. Onam is now celebrated by everyone in the region irrespective of any caste or religion. Onam has become a secular festival of India and can be classified as a celebration after the harvesting season.
